For this men’s issue, I channeled my dad, Spud Sparling, who lived life voraciously and was gregarious, hard working and athletic. He worked hard but played harder. I was the first girl after four boys so I ran faster, climbed higher and just did more, not to keep up with my brothers, but to keep up with my dad. He and I white water rafted down the Snake River in Oregon, sailed Lake Michigan and canoed the Au Sable River in the dead of winter. It’s no wonder I loved working on this issue, traveling to the Orvis Fly Fishing School at Pursell Farms in Alabama to push myself and breathe in the landscape and reflect on my blessings. I’m holding my first-ever bass caught with a boogle bug popper!
We’re thrilled to introduce five men who live or work in our community who are making an important contribution through their work in and out of the office. Say hello when you see them and let us know if there are men in your world who are making a difference. Chime in on our Facebook page or drop me a line so we can continue to tell stories about the engaging people who live right here.
Happy Father’s Day, Spud!
