Buckhead Heritage Society Shines Light on Athos Menaboni

Approximately 60 people attended the recent Buckhead Heritage Society program on the work of the late Buckhead artist Athos Menaboni, who is widely known for his murals, and research and paintings of birds. Sponsored by Paces Construction Company, the sold-out event also welcomed members of the Atlanta Audubon Society. Guests were first treated to a viewing of the newly conserved Menaboni murals in the breakfast room at the May Patterson Goodrum House on West Paces Ferry Road at Arden. Barbara Hyde, Keeper of the 1933 Shutze-designed historic home being renovated by Tad Brown and the Watson-Brown Foundation, explained the conservation process and showed pictures of the room before work began.

The attendees then traveled a short distance to Spotswood Hall, a 1913 A. Ten Eyck Brown-designed home remodeled by Shutze in 1933, which has a rotunda entry with Menaboni murals. Conservator Jill Biskin discussed her conservation work on the Athos mural at Spotswood, owned by Jack and Juanita Markwalter, who hosted the group.

Atl History Center Midtown

An intimate photography exhibition opened at Margaret Mitchell House at Atlanta History Center Midtown. “Weeping May Endure for a Night: The Funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through the Lens of Declan Haun” takes guests back to those difficult days in April 1968. The 25 photographs were captured by the late Haun, a Chicago freelance photojournalist. “We were thinking about the unique contribution that the Atlanta History Center can make in a commemoration that will be marked by many organizations, locally and nationally,” says Calinda Lee, History Center historian. “Declan Haun’s images resonate across time. And they reveal the special relationship that Atlantans had with Dr. King, a native son. The photos capture Atlantans’ personal and visceral sense of loss and connection to Dr. King and his work.” Haun was a leading freelance photojournalist of the time who covered major news events including presidential campaigns, political conventions, and elections. 404.814.4000 or visit

BuckHaven and Forbes

Forbes magazine has named Little Alley Steak one of the best steak houses in America. The original is located in Roswell. The newest restaurant is set to open May 7th at 3500 Lenox Road in One Alliance Center in Buckhead. The restaurant atmosphere is butcher block inspired with track lighting fashioned from meat hooks. The entire space is made of butcher block wood and a steel meat hook chandelier (made by hand) hangs from the ceiling. There is also a floor-to-ceiling wine room. The outdoor patio is 2500 square feet with a full outdoor bar, lounge and dining patio. It will offer the full food menu in the dining section and small bites elsewhere. The huge windows surrounding the patio will allow customers to see the bright lights of Buckhead while canceling the noise inside. Little Alley Buckhead will also offer unique sides, a top notch charcuterie program, amazing seafood options, a rich wine list with a full decanting service and over 356 bourbon selections.
