Volunteer Love

Blue Heron would like to thank Hands On Atlanta and Skyland Trail for providing energetic and enthusiastic volunteers at the end of the summer. By participating in trash pickup and invasive species removal, they were able to clear their Emma Wetlands property of materials that prevent native plants and animals from thriving. If you’re interested in helping preserve the wilderness of the Blue Heron Nature Preserve, please contact Brooke at or visit their website at to learn more.

Smart Seniors

Six Marist School seniors—Allison Hart, Jack Pantlin, Paul Plaia, Beatrice Russell, Conor Walsh and Benjamin Wise—have been named Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of students who qualified as Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. These students entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) last spring. As Semifinalists, these academically talented students will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million. From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and, in February, they will be notified of this designation. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists. Buckhaven Lifestyle congratulates these fine students.

Art and Giving

Art For Art has teamed up with an international charity to bring Atlantans a unique opportunity this Thanksgiving: take home your favorite works of art produced by talented student artists from underserved communities in Africa and support the students’ visual arts classes in Africa. The “Art For Africa” Exhibition opens on Saturday, November 25, in the exhibition space at The Ballog, an artisans market in Serenbe. On display will be artwork from Africa, which visitors can take home. Admission is free, and visitors are encouraged to connect not only with the drawings and paintings, but also with the student artists who created them, through short bios that are included with each piece.  For more information about this and other Art For Art exhibits, visit

The DeSoto Savannah

Located in the heart of historic Savannah on the site of Gen. Oglethorpe’s Barracks, The DeSoto Savannah is the perfect cultivation of Southern history and modern luxury. The recently renovated Sotherly Hotel opened their doors in August, unveiling the newly added rooftop pool, a contemporary upgrade to their 246 guest rooms, as well as a custom SCAD art gallery and two restaurants, rich in Savannah traditions. Chef-driven 1540 Room and Edgar’s Proof & Provision, feature flavorful dishes and craft cocktails daily. Guest can enjoy the “back porch”, a beautifully shaded porch that embodies the true atmosphere of the South where visitors can relax and unwind after a day in the city. With the charming views of Savannah, the reimagined modern feel and the Southern hospitality at every corner, it’s no surprise the DeSoto Savannah remains an icon of the South and a favorable destination since 1890.
