2017 Mercedes-Benz SLC300 Roadster 3

An affordable German gem.

The all-new 2017 Mercedes-Benz SLC300 Roadster realizes the dreams of even their most frugal enthusiasts by delivering an attractive, hardtop convertible replacing the SLK line starting at $47,950. At first look, the exterior restyling of its more rounded front, diamond grille, LED lights, tail lamps and rear bumper were not only evident, but applauded. Under the hood, the 2.0L inline-4 Turbo engine boasts 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft torque to responsively expedite lane changes, get jumps on green lights, and ultimately feed the driver’s hunger for road-grabbing power controlled by 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission. The efficient, wallet-friendly gas mileage (25 city/32 highway) further sweetens the deal.

The retractable Panorama roof provides a bird’s eye view of the luxurious, two-passenger cockpit enamored with aluminum trim, supple MB-Tex upholstery, dual roll bars, and Bluetooth connectivity. (When fully lowered, there was still remarkably a decent amount of trunk space for a pair of weekender bags.) Our review model was loaded with numerous package upgrades, including mbrace Connect for multi-function remote access; Nappa leather seating; Premium 2 (DVD, COMAND with navigation, Apple CarPlay, heated seats, keyless entry, multi-color ambient lighting, signature AIRSCARF, and harman/kardon LOGIC7 surround sound system); Sport (galvanized paddle shifters, AMG body upgrade, chromed diamond grille); and Night, which includes AMG’s 18-inch, multi-spoke wheels, a black front spoiler and other welcomed extras. Another standout was the highly-recommended MAGIC SKY control where a driver can control the glass roof’s amount of tint and light exposure by hand ($2,500).

And sure, the more expensive AMG SLC 43 flexes a significant 362-horsepower upgrade, but the 300 Roadster still leaves very little to be desired whether it’s the basic model or embellished with numerous package options. Ultimately, theSLC300 buyers will get the biggest bang for their buck with the revered Mercedes-Benz craftsmanship backing it up.
