Meet Katherine Oates Small of Brookhaven, your talented neighbor who lights up the state performing with local opera companies. Katie is a mezzo soprano, performing leading roles to much acclaim with the Georgia State University Opera Theater, Opera Breve, Harrower Summer Opera Workshop, Capitol City Opera, the Atlanta Opera Studio Tour, Peach State Opera, and Florida State University. She enjoys traveling both nationally and internationally for professional performance and musical study opportunities. Along with extensive scene work and solo performances (classical, operatic and musical theater), full operatic roles are numerous and include Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Jo (Little Women), Hermia (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Elizabeth Proctor (The Crucible). While at GSU, Katie was the recipient of the Atlanta Opera Guild Scholarship Award, selected as a 2015 Brumby Concerto Competition winner, and competed as a finalist in the Advanced Women category of the 2015 Southeast NATS competition. Since receiving her master’s degree, Katie founded a small opera company, a touring company bringing nomadic vocal drama to the Southeast. Upcoming engagements include the role of Dorabella in Così fan tutte with small opera, Petti Sing in The Mikado with Capitol City Opera, the role of Alicia Johnson in a workshop of a new opera, Lady Susan, and both covering the mainstage role and performing the young artist role of Dorabella this summer with Ash Lawn Opera.
We asked Katie to tell us a little more about her life here in BuckHaven.
My husband and I bought a house in Ashford Park November 2015 but I was renting in the same neighborhood down the street when we met in 2013. We fell in love in this neighborhood…and with this neighborhood.
Life before BuckHaven?
I grew up in Hampton Roads, Virginia, until leaving for college (FSU in Tallahassee) then moved to Atlanta.
I am married to Ryan Small and we do not have kids yet. I have a couple of part-time remote corporate jobs. I am a sourcer for The Partners Group (Buckhead’s No 1 Attorney Placement Agency) and I work for Bolt Marketing Studio. First and foremost, I am an opera singer and have been pursuing professional performance for years. I have sung roles with Capitol City Opera, Peach State Opera, and the Atlanta Opera Studio Tour since I moved to Atlanta in 2010. Opera is where my passion lies and I am very excited to announce that my most recent endeavor is founding my own opera company, small opera company, in 2016! Look out for our first performance coming this April!
Fave after-theater spots?
Ooo…this is tough because I LOVE so many spots in the BuckHaven area…You cannot go wrong with Town Brookhaven (so many excellent options but Old Blind Dog is a personal fave). I also love Kaleidoscope, the Haven, and other spots on the Dresden strip. North Buckhead options include Mirko on Roswell, Gordon Biersch, Tin Lizzy’s, and the Prado on Roswell (Marlow’s being my go-to there).
