The Brookhaven Parks and Recreation Department is offering lots of fun ways for residents to get involved with the community and get in shape this summer. Summer sports are heating up as registration is underway for adult softball, flag football, futsal and basketball.
“Our adult sports leagues give citizens the opportunity to gather their friends, form a team and stay active in Brookhaven,” says Taylor Davis, Brookhaven’s athletic manager. “Whether it’s casual or competitive, there’s always an opportunity to keep fit and have fun in our parks.”
Youth sports leagues and camps feature baseball, softball, flag football, basketball, soccer, tennis and swimming.
Registration is also open for a variety of summer programming. Summer fitness, dance, art, cheer and senior activities will carry on throughout the summer.
“From 18 months to 99 years, Brookhaven has classes and programs for all ages,” says Philip Mitchell, Brookhaven’s Recreation manager. “With a wide range of offerings like art, meditation, boot camps, gymnastics and more, we have classes to improve your mind, body, and soul.”
Classes include art for both children and adults, youth cheerleading and beginners’ tango.
Fitness offerings include outdoor bootcamps, pilates, gymnastics and meditation. Activities geared toward seniors include mental and physical exercise instruction, pilates and a social club.
Classes and camps are led by professionals and experts in their fields. The city has partnered with organizations and companies such as the Metro Atlanta YMCA, REI, Elevate Sports Academy, GO Kickball, Creative Movement and Dance, Murphey Candler Little League, Murphey Candler Girls Softball Association, Atlanta Colt Youth Association, Concorde Fire Soccer Club and Universal Tennis Management to bring the parks’ summer offerings to life.
And there’s no summer without city pools, which opened May 23. The Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a number of water activities this season at city pools, including Water Safety Day on May 30, Back to School Splash Party on Aug. 1 and Doggy Diving Day on Sept. 6.
